Two common formats—many exceptions
Many North American residential wallpapers are approximately 20.5 inches wide and packaged at about 33 feet long. A common European format is about 53 centimeters wide and 10.05 meters long. Those formats are very close in total area, but neither is a universal standard.
| Common format | Width | Length | Nominal area |
|---|---|---|---|
| US packaged roll | 20.5 in | 33 ft | About 56.4 ft² |
| European metric roll | 53 cm | 10.05 m | About 5.33 m² / 57.4 ft² |
Commercial wallcoverings, grasscloth, wide-width products, murals, and panels can be much wider or sold by the linear yard or meter. Treat the table as a quick-fill option, never as a substitute for the actual product specification.
Why “single” and “double” cause confusion
In parts of the US market, wallpaper may be priced using a single-roll equivalent but physically packaged and sold as a double roll. A familiar example is a 20.5-inch roll: the single-roll equivalent may be roughly 16.5 feet long, while the package delivered is roughly 33 feet long.
Do not enter 16.5 ft simply because the price description mentions a single roll.
The exact terminology depends on the retailer and manufacturer. Check whether the displayed price is per single-roll equivalent, per bolt, or per packaged roll—and verify how many physical packages the cart quantity represents.
Nominal area is not usable coverage
Width × length gives the roll’s nominal area. That number is helpful for comparing packages, but it can overstate what reaches the wall. Installation uses full-height strips, and every strip may lose material to trimming and pattern alignment.
For an 8-foot wall, a 33-foot roll appears to contain four wall heights. Add trim and a 20.5-inch repeat, however, and the matched drop may be about 8.54 feet. Only three full drops fit. The remaining length cannot make a fourth full-height strip.
Use the vertical repeat and match type from the label. For the calculation, read our pattern-repeat guide.
Five label details to capture
- Packaged width. Record inches or centimeters exactly.
- Total packaged length. Use feet or meters for the roll you will actually receive.
- Vertical pattern repeat. Do not substitute the horizontal repeat.
- Match type. Random, straight, and half-drop use different cutting plans.
- Dye lot or run number. All rolls for one visible project should come from the same production run.
Also check whether the product is reverse-hung, paste-the-wall, pre-pasted, sold as numbered panels, or supplied in a mural set. Those instructions affect installation even when they do not change the simple roll dimensions.
Planning limits
Dimensions in this guide are common retail formats, not mandatory standards. The manufacturer’s current product label and installation sheet are authoritative. For estimating practice, the Wallcoverings Association also advises accounting for pattern match and consistent run numbers.
