Calculate four walls and subtract large openings
The room perimeter is 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 feet. Multiply by the 8-foot wall height for 352 ft² of gross wall area. The calculator deducts one standard 21 ft² door and two standard 12 ft² windows, leaving 307 ft².
Measure unusually large openings directly rather than relying on the defaults.
USG guidance recommends subtracting large openings such as doorways and picture windows while ignoring small penetrations such as electrical boxes and pipes in an area estimate.
Add the ceiling as a separate surface
The 12 × 10 foot ceiling adds 120 ft². Net walls plus ceiling equal 427 ft². If the ceiling is not part of the project, remove it rather than trying to offset it with a lower waste percentage.
| Surface | Area |
|---|---|
| Gross walls | 352 ft² |
| Openings | −45 ft² |
| Net walls | 307 ft² |
| Ceiling | +120 ft² |
| Total | 427 ft² |
Apply allowance and round to sheets
At 10% allowance, 427 × 1.10 = 469.7 ft². One 4 × 8 panel covers 32 ft². Dividing 469.7 by 32 gives 14.68, which rounds upward to 15 sheets. Those sheets supply 480 ft².
The supplied quantity is 53 ft² above the net surface, or about 12.4%. Whole-sheet rounding explains why the final overage exceeds the selected 10% allowance.
Why the final order may differ
An area estimate assumes offcuts can be reused efficiently. A wall-by-wall layout may reveal additional sheets because seams must land on appropriate support, end joints are offset, openings interrupt otherwise reusable pieces, or the selected panel length cannot span the intended run.
- Sketch panel orientation and seams for each wall and the ceiling.
- Confirm framing spacing and supported edges.
- Use the panel type, thickness, and fastener schedule required by the assembly.
- Plan delivery, indoor storage, lifting, and ceiling support.
- Estimate joint compound, tape, fasteners, corner bead, and accessories separately.
