Calculation methodology

How a room becomes a purchase quantity.

Every calculator follows the same audit trail: measure the relevant surface, apply the product-specific rule, add a visible allowance, and round only at the purchase step.

The five-step estimate

  1. Measure. Enter finished dimensions in one measurement system.
  2. Remove only relevant openings. Paint and drywall deduct the standard opening areas shown by the tool; wallpaper deducts only qualifying full-height openings.
  3. Apply coats, repeat, yield, or package coverage. This is the material-specific part of the calculation.
  4. Add the chosen allowance. Waste is explicit and editable; it is never hidden inside a formula.
  5. Round to a purchasable unit. Boxes, rolls, sheets, and bags round upward because a partial package cannot complete the estimate.

Core formulas

Paint and drywall wall area

Rectangular room2 × (length + width) × height − qualifying openings

An optional ceiling adds length × width. Paint then multiplies by coats; drywall divides by panel area.

Tile and flooring

Area is length × width. Tile divides by the area of one tile, adds the selected allowance, then rounds to whole tiles and whole boxes. Flooring adds its allowance to room area, divides by the square footage printed on one carton, and rounds to whole cartons.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is counted by full-height drops, not nominal roll area. Wall width determines the number of strips. Wall height, trim, match type, and vertical repeat determine the length of each usable drop and therefore the drops obtained from one roll.

Concrete

Slab volume is length × width × depth. Imperial depth is converted from inches to feet before volume is calculated. The selected allowance is applied to volume, then volume is divided by the yield printed for one bag and rounded upward.

Rounding is part of the buying decision

Intermediate values retain precision. The final package count always rounds upward. That means the supplied area can exceed the selected waste percentage, especially on small rooms or products with large cartons. The result panel reports the package count and the supplied quantity so this extra overage is visible.

Paint currently rounds upward to quarter-gallon increments in imperial mode and whole litres in metric mode. Not every coating is sold in those increments, so the product’s actual can sizes control the final combination.

Source hierarchy

Defaults and practical notes are checked in this order: current product data sheet or installation guide; manufacturer or trade-association guidance; major retailer project guidance; then simple dimensional arithmetic. A source link supports the claim beside it—it does not imply that the source endorses Project Matter.

Product labels and project documents supersede website defaults. A published yield may still vary with surface texture, porosity, application method, cutting plan, compaction, spillage, and site conditions.

How changes are checked

Calculation functions are separated from the interface and covered by automated examples for common imperial and metric inputs. The site checker validates titles, descriptions, canonical URLs, internal links, structured data, AdSense identification on monetized pages, and production-domain references.

Before publication, worked examples are recalculated from the same formulas used by the browser tools. Desktop and mobile layouts are checked for clipped controls, unreadable tables, broken navigation, and console errors. Corrections can be filed through the public contact route.
