Start with the net install area
Multiply the finished length by the finished width for each rectangular floor area. A 12 × 10 foot room is 120 ft². Measure closets, alcoves, bays, and connecting areas separately when they also receive flooring; do not rely on a listing’s room size.
Then divide by the exact coverage printed on one carton.
Choose waste for the product and layout
Lowe’s general flooring guidance recommends purchasing 10% more than the calculated area, while product and installation guidance can call for a different range. The Home Depot notes that vinyl plank preparation may require 10–20% more and that hardwood allowances vary with the layout.
The reason matters. Straight runs in a regular room can reuse more end cuts. Diagonal installation, short stagger requirements, many doorways, herringbone, damaged pieces, color sorting, and a discontinued product can justify additional material. The current manufacturer installation instructions should control.
Round upward to whole cartons
If one carton covers 22 ft², divide the required 132 ft² by 22. The result is exactly six cartons. A result of 6.01 would become seven cartons because the calculator assumes cartons are the purchase unit.
| Stage | Quantity | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Net floor | 120 ft² | 12 × 10 |
| Required | 132 ft² | 120 × 1.10 |
| Cartons | 6 | 132 ÷ 22 |
| Supplied overage | 12 ft² | 132 − 120 |
Carton coverage already accounts for the number and dimensions of the pieces inside. Do not separately multiply plank length and width unless you are verifying the carton label.
Four checks before placing the order
- Confirm the exact SKU, color, lot, carton coverage, and carton price.
- Review the installation drawing and required stagger or pattern.
- Add rooms and closets that will be installed continuously in the same product.
- Separate flooring cartons from underlayment, moisture control, transitions, trim, adhesive, and fasteners.
Future repairs may be difficult to match if the product, color, texture, or production lot changes.
Sources and limits
General allowance context comes from the Lowe’s flooring buying guide and Home Depot vinyl plank guide. The worked example is original arithmetic. Product instructions and an installer’s layout supersede the default.
